downtime

Now that the operating season is over and the resort that we work at is closed, Rebecca and I have been enjoying a bit of — at least what I think is — well-deserved, downtime. We've settled into our new digs, a beautiful condo not far from the resort, and have been making plans for the colder months to come. Months that will happily include a little bit of traveling. Back to The Island Shortly after the resort locked its…

lakes

Rebecca is never satisfied unless she's pushing the envelope so it was inevitable that just admiring the lakes around where we've been living wasn't going to cut it. No, she had to have a challenge and swimming the length of one of the lakes was what she set her mind on. On Labor Day weekend, shortly after 9:00 AM, she donned a borrowed wetsuit and with me and two of our friends watching over her from a nearby ski boat,…

Kettle Valley Railway

Two and a half months. That's how long it's been since I last posted anything on this website. What's that all about? Well, as always, I post only when I am inspired to do so and lately, the spark just hasn't been there. You shouldn't read too much into that though. All is well with Rebecca and me. For those who are curious and don't follow our more frequent updates on social media, we've had a great season and are…

pirates

There was a time when, if I didn't post something on the blog each morning, people would wonder if we were OK. Had the boat sunk? Were we lost at sea or had we been captured by pirates? Beyond that, I'd actually feel off if I didn't take the time to reflect at the start of the day, to record my thoughts and occasionally details of our adventures. The act of writing had become that much of a habit for…

Kalamalka

Tween Lakes Resort, our new home, lies on a narrow isthmus separating Kalamalka Lake from Wood Lake. Its name often shortened here to Kal Lake, Kalamalka Lake is sometimes referred to as the "lake of a thousand colors." It's still early in the season so only a few die-hard boaters are out on the water but that will change soon. My understanding is that the lake is a hub of activity during the summer months. Just as we always have a strong…

Spion Kop

One of the things that I love about British Columbia is how quickly you can go from civilization to actual wilderness. We noted it first in Fernie and again here in the Okanagan Valley. For example, one of the trailheads to Spion Kop, a popular local hiking area, lies just 4km from our doorstep. It was there that we met up with a couple of experienced Kelowna cyclists, Miles and Doug, for our latest adventure. We followed the red trail to the summit.…
