As often happens, the Thursday “non-work” day was followed by a Friday “all-work” day. In fact, we didn’t step foot on shore at all yesterday. Instead, the inside of the boat was scrubbed clean and various small projects were brought to conclusion.

One slightly larger project that we worked on was installing the fittings to hang the sun/rain screens that Rebecca had sewn some time ago. This project involved screwing some pad eyes into the bimini and I had been procrastinating, as I typically do with things that involve putting new holes in the boat. The mesh screens are valuable to us though as they will keep our cockpit dryer and/or cooler. Rebecca made them so that they can be easily installed/removed and when up, they can be left to hang straight down as shown in the first photo or tied to the stern rails.

Today we’re going to make the short hop inside the reefs to the island of Culebrita which lies just north east of Culebra where we are now. The weather is not expected to really lay down until Thursday so hopefully the trip won’t be too rough.

Check this out… Joel, one of our regular blog readers, sent me this image of his iPhone. He is using the “skyscape” photo that I made up as the desktop picture on both it and his computer. Awesome. Joel also sent us some great detailed travel notes and maps for the BVIs. Very, very cool!

If you’re looking to kill a bit more time today, here are a couple of short videos that I finally had the time to get online. Enjoy. πŸ™‚

PS: I apologize for the silly look on my face in the second video!

  1. What type of material did you use for the screens? Looks like a great idea.

  2. Nice job Martha Stewart……I bet they make a huge difference (cooler) in the cockpit and maybe even in the salon (if the sun is from stern)……You guys have come a long way since your first blog post and that is really cool…….Culebrita is beautiful…….Pending winds, St John is a NON MISS stop…My favorite place for coves and anchorage…..A lot of marine park regulations so you will have to follow anchoring/mooring regs…….Meagans bay on St Thomas is nice too

  3. Speaking of a work day. Its 10 degrees and sunny !!! Were going to take the cover off the boat today. No need to pack a lunch. It’s midge time. Yummy!!!
Nice sewing job Rebecca on the screens. We have them on Pirate Jenny and use them alot.

  4. Screens look great. You will be sad to hear that Sailrite in Annapolis is closing in July and Dan is NOT HAPPY! Actually, neither are we.
    Mike silly? Nahhh!

  5. Work? Come on be truthful. That’s not work, it’s just not doing nothing at all or exploring. Your on a boat with pretty blue water all around, the sun shines most all the day, your living in shorts and sun glasses, most all the neighbors are friendly, and your planning on more adventure daily headed down island towards Grenada.
You can’t fool me, I lived it for awhile. Call it “play-work” Lots of play-work.

Rebecca done a great job, Keep her on “for now” πŸ™‚

  7. Screens look nice. I see a machine and learning to sew is needed.
Rebecca has a nice tan going on, but you still look a little white/red. Whats up with that?

  8. Thanks for the screen material link. Keep us posted on how they hold up and if they do their job well. We are planning a similar set up.
