at home

It's been a little less than two weeks since we landed in Fernie and we're starting to feel at home here. In truth, it hasn't been all that difficult. We just needed to replace our flip flops with snow boots and acquire some warm clothing (plaid, of course) so that we looked the part. The time that we invested in creating resumes, writing cover letters, and applying for jobs has paid off, at least for Rebecca. In the short time…

It was minus 23C in Fernie this morning. That's not a pleasant temperature for anyone, and that includes the locals. In spite of temperatures which are a definite shock to our systems, we're both very pleased with our decision to make Fernie our new home. And I say that even though we've only been here a week. To anyone who ever asked, we always said that if we were to move back to Canada, it would be to British Columbia. As…

promise

On several occasions we have taken note how certain cruising friends, once finished with their life on the water, so easily slid back into accumulating all the trappings of life on land. I don't say that to judge because comfort and toys can feel good. Our promise to one another though, and I express that same promise to you, our readers: we do not intend to follow that same path. We have become so accustomed to living in small spaces with…

Canada still has colorful money, there are still Tim Hortons coffee shops on every corner, and the winters are still…

fernie

I'll admit it, we had a dark couple of days surrounding the time of my last post. It's been a very long time since we haven't known at least the general direction that we should be heading, so having no plan or course was painful. Much can change in a couple of days though. Since my last post, there has been a shocking (to us) show of support from our friends and family. We have received numerous financial donations that…

end of the road

Yesterday was a tough day for us and it had nothing to do with the difficulty of the riding. In fact, our trip from our friend Maureen's beautiful house to Paquera was physically quite easy. After we said our early-morning goodbye's to our friend, we had a nice ride on some quiet back roads to Cóbano and from there, we followed a relatively-quiet paved road right to the ferry dock. Not too demanding and actually quite fast. When we reached…
