As we have more and more opportunity to share the Virgin Islands with different groups of guests, I imagine how the stories they will tell of their experience here when they return home will vary from one another. In some ways, visiting the Virgins can be a lot like the story of the blind men and the elephant where each, having only been exposed to one piece of the elephant (tusk, tail, leg, body, etc.), describes the animal completely differently than the others. I could see visitors here behaving similarly.

Those travelers who only frequent the busy stops with nightlife might feel that the Virgins are best visited by those looking to party, and who enjoy crowds. Those who stay in marinas every night would no doubt have a different experience. For the visitors who venture away from the spots most frequented by charterers, they may find that there are still a number of quiet and pristine spots where solitude can be found. Is any one group wrong? Of course not. In fact, they’re all perfectly correct. It’s important to remember that, here or anywhere else that you visit, your experience is just that, your experience.

In four and a half hours we’ll have another group of guests arriving here to go sailing with us. What part of the elephant will they get to experience?

  1. I enjoyed your analogy of the Blind Men and the Elephant! Great perspective! I share that story with my students very often about my classes. Here is to hoping to gain a new perspective with One Love and the BVI’s in the near future! Good Stuff!

  2. That’s one of the things I like about the VIs – they can be whatever you want them to be.
