When tragedies occur, people often seek some type of silver lining to help ease the pain. If the tragic loss by fire of the sailing yacht Sandpyper has any such outcome, it is only due to owners Ed and Annette taking the time to share their heartbreaking story, and the lessons that they learned from it.

As the Sandpyper story shows, fire is a scary thing. It is one of the true enemies of ships at sea. A quick search of our blog will net further evidence, as I have written several posts describing how we have been witness to yachts rapidly burning to their waterline. In fact, a catastrophic fire like this is the only reason that we even considered carrying a life raft on our catamaran, ZTC. Ed and Annette’s post has several important lessons, and in my opinion, should be required reading for all cruisers. We offer our thanks to them for sharing, and wish them our best!
