As I’m currently in the process of compiling some video footage for a short film that I want to put together, I had the bright idea that we should get up early today and hike to the top of one of the islands here to record the sun rise. We arose when we planned to and were on top of the hill at the appointed time. We remembered the camera(s) and the tripod(s). In hindsight though, the one crucial piece of kit that we didn’t remember to bring is a compass. Unfortunately my perspective from the top of the hill didn’t quite match up with my view from the boat and I ended up having the camera pointing in a less-than-ideal direction. Oh well… there will be other sunrises, won’t there?

While we were up there though, eyes to the southeast where the camera was facing, wondering where the sun was 🙁 , we did a little survey. There were 30 boats at anchor in front of us and of them, 10 were catamarans. Of those 10 cats we believe that, outside of our boat and our friends’ Lagoon, the rest were charter boats. Of the 20 monohulls I bet not more than a couple are being operated by charterers.

For those who think that 30 is a large number of boats to have in an anchorage, we have been told that, at high season, there could be as many as a hundred or more boats here. I haven’t verified this with other sources but I tend to believe it. The anchorage is definitely big enough to support it.

  1. Speaking of cats. We have a mooring in Falmouth, ME (for one of those mono-hulled things). There is a new arrival next to us – a PDQ32 named Z-Breeze, out of NY. We will have to head over when we see them aboard to welcome them. Our harbor master estimates there are around 600 fewer boats in the anchorage than there were three years ago.

    • We haven’t seen another PDQ 32 since the Bahamas although we do from time to time come across 36s. Even though we don’t know your new neighbors, please tell them we said Hi!

  2. Looking SW. I expect you got a bit of stick from your loyal companion 🙂

You are right though. There are many dozens of sunset shots, varied, impressive and lovely. But very few sunrises.

Better ‘luck’ next time. Don’t be surprised if you are told to go on your own!

    Mike

  3. And to think back in the mid 80’s there was only one other boat besides us anchored in the Tobago Cays. Oh that’s right, gps has become readily available since then!
