Another week has gone by so that must mean it’s time for another shotgun upload of pics from one of our exploratory hikes. These particular photos were taken yesterday as Rebecca, George, Nico and I made our way over to the windward side of St. Lucia’s top end. We had no more than a tiny advertising map to point us in the right direction but the map did show a dotted line indicating a trail which paralleled the coast so we figured that once we found the shoreline, the trail wouldn’t be too hard to pick up. And as you can see from the pics, we were right.

Even though we left just after 8:00 AM, the sun quickly gained strength and started to beat down on us. That is, after the little rain squall that we were forced to take cover from shortly after reaching the coastline. Immediately after setting foot on the beach we were adopted by a pack of dogs who took it upon themselves to accompany us for much of the trip. The lead dog, a female who had obviously just recently given birth to a number of puppies, was particularly adept at leading us on the trails, earning her the nickname Scout. She, and her sidekicks, were fun to have tagging along.

The walk was enjoyable and the terrain was much dryer than we had come to expect from our previous trips to St. Lucia. If Rebecca and I hadn’t been playing in the waves we might have ended the trip completely dry.

About 4 or so hours into the hike, after making our way to the summit of a large hill, we were surprised to find, out of sight from us below, an entire community of very large houses built on estate lots, many of them still for sale. We followed the roads between these houses on our return trip and even managed to secure a ride in the back of a pickup for a small portion of it. No, the dogs did not see fit to chaperone us on the return leg of the hike. By this time they had wisely already said their fair wells and gone their own way.

  1. Great Pictures Again………I love when people give me constructive critisisms of what I post and dont post……..I love the pictures of all the scenery and hiking, etc…….It is all part of the journey….I would love to see you guys get back to more boating pictures a long with your hiking and landscape pictures……A good mix would make an already great blog better in my opinion!!! And you know I always love the videos…….Thanks as always for a great read in the am and you have the BEST Blog out there…….

    • Hi John

We too love critique, unless it’s negative, then the poster can just P off. 😉 Just kidding.

I too like boating pics (posting and viewing) but you obviously recognize that our boat, like every other cruising vessel out there, is underway less than 1% of the time on average. There are only so many posts that can be made of open water!

  2. Here is the 5 post catchup comment. 1. Can’t you just get ZTC up on one pontoon and hang off the trapeeze like a HobieCat? 2. Zippers, just don’t go commando. 3. Thank you for taking us along your “not running away” adventure. 4. Seeing the nearly gnarled cable makes me realize the ding in my BRAND STINKING NEW CAR is not as bad as I think. 5. I’m declaring this weekend a Hiking weekend. I ain’t painting, fixing, or cooking anything.

    • 1. We do so frequently. Not!
      2. We also do that frequently. MUCH more than Number 1 above.
      3. You’re very welcome.
      4. There are many worse things than either of those occurrences.
      5. Excellent plan! I hope you have nice weather for that. Take plenty of pics!

  3. Nice hike by the look of it. Nice pics thanks.

Interesting to be reminded how much windier it is on the east/windward side of the islands. Are there any harbours round there in case someone gets into difficulties?

    Mike

    • No anchorages marked as such on the charts although they do show some docks at Dennery. There also looks to be some reefs that one could tuck in behind if worst came to worst. That is the risk of sailing down the windward side of the island as opposed to the leeward side.

  4. OK, I have to ask – What does the ZERO painted on the sign mean? You didn’t do that in honor of your boat, did you?

  5. Thanks for posting pics of us Mike, it was a great hike!
