The primary source of weather information for many of the cruisers here is Chris Parker, who broadcasts his forecasts over the SSB radio several times each day. Although you can pay to become a “sponsoring vessel,” giving you the option to call in and ask him specific questions about your area and your travel plans, many others, ourselves included, just listen in to what he has to say.

It’s obvious that Chris has put a lot of time into learning the art of “weather guessing” and he is very well respected. So much so that when we found out that he was going to be giving multiple seminars here on various weather topics, we knew that we had to attend at least a few of them, and we also knew that many others would be attending too. The registration for these classes took place on Wednesday at 1:30 PM. We showed up a bit early only to find a line reminiscent of a Disney World amusement ride. We joked that we should have pitched a tent to wait in line as die-hard fans do for rock concerts. As it turns out, we ultimately managed to secure spaces for the two seminars that we wanted, Basic Weather, which takes place this morning and Advanced Weather, which takes place tomorrow. I’m sure we’ll be taking a bunch of notes!

By the way, I hate begging but there is only one week remaining to acquire “crew” in our bid to win a complete re-rigging of ZTC with Dyneema®. Thanks to everyone who has already added their name to the list but I fear that we’re going to need a LOT more names to be in the running. For those not yet aware of what I am talking about, we need people, lots of people, to join our virtual crew. You can do so by going to this link and clicking the orange “Follow Me” banner. You will then receive a confirmation email and you simply click the link in that email to be added. If you’ve already done this, and your name is on the list, thank you! If you haven’t, please take two minutes and do so.

Want to be extra, extra helpful (because as I mentioned, we need the help)? Repost this link and info to your Facebook pages or pass it along to others, encouraging your circle of friends to support us too. The contest ends March 4th!

By the way, it took me about 10-15 minutes to write this post and more than an hour to upload it. Slow internet sucks!

  1. I was trying to figure out why everyone was in such heavy jackets to line up for a seminar in the Bahamas (while also thinking it didn’t look much like the Bahamas).

    Duh!

Hi M.& R we have tried several times to add our names to the list & each time it say’s we are already members ? but our names are not in the list ? not that i am worried if it is there but i take it it should be ?? & i have used both names & both email addresses to join, so i would of thought one of them would be there. ? may be its just an advertising gimick for peoples emails to send other stuff out later ? & they already have a winner so to speak ?? i would like to know more & why ours are not part of your crew ??.
Hope those weather seminars go well & are interesting

  3. It is a advertising gimmick. It gets the sponsoring magazine a lot of subscribers who forget to cancel their “free” trial subscription. I’ve never been able to open the magazine itself, so once the contest is over I will be cancelling. I’m not going to do it until after the contest, though, so I don’t screw up your chances to win.

    • Helen, unless you gave them credit card info (I certainly didn’t and they didn’t ask for it) your ‘free’ subscription will remain just that. How else would they be able to start charging you for it?
