Have you ever climbed to the top of a dormant volcano? Have you ever climbed down inside one? If you never get the chance, the following pics and video might give you a hint of what it’s like.

The video below starts off with us walking along the crater floor and then ultimately making our way up the boulders to the crater rim. Check out the size of some of the trees growing down inside the volcano! We would never have guessed that there would be trees that large down there. Apparently, the amazing growth has something to do with the 1500 to 2000 mm of rain that falls there each year.

The video was shot with our GoPro camera but has been accelerated by 200% so it’ll probably appear a bit bouncy. If you have the bandwidth, I’d definitely recommend watching it in HD.

There are multiple signs which will lead you from the town to the trailhead.

Yes, that’s where we’re heading.

Red Bellied Racer. We saw three of them on this trip. This one was just under a meter in length.

And up we go.

The climb up the mountain wasn’t enough for her!

Hike at your own risk AND beware of the crazy rooster!

There are ropes rigged for the descent. They aren’t really needed but they do keep you going in the right direction.

“Stroke the furry wall.” Do you know what movie that quote is from?

This requires no caption.

Don’t vandalize living trees by carving your name in them!

This shot was taken at the highest point of the mountain, above the crater rim…

Mazinga!

Doesn’t Google Earth rock?

  1. Between the rooster tour guide and “stroke the furry wall” you gave us a great laugh for early in the morning ! Best to you both in your travels !

  2. Great video and photos Mike. The scenery was great. Much better since you had the camera and were following Rebecca rather than the other way around. Thanks for allowing us to tag along.

And btw, Get Him to the Greek.

  3. Great video, and love the music too! Love those big trees, and with all that greenery I would have never guessed that ya’ll were hiking a dormant volcano.

  4. That was Amazing!
The crater floor is its own ecosystem. I would have just thought you were somewhere in the middle of the island, with you having to just walk back towards the water.
Btw, does look nicer in HD

  5. I am almost positive that we met that same rooster up on the rim of the caldera. Or a close relative with the same insane tendencies. This guy would jump up into my lap and demand granola bars. After he pecked me it was rooster time-out time.
