October 13, 2008:

Doesn’t it sound kind of crazy? That is, planning on running away to the tropics to live on a sailboat, when we have neither the money nor the skills to make it happen? That’s right, we don’t even know how to sail!!!

Yes, it does sound crazy! But just in case there are other people out there who also dream big, we are going to document our progress on how we make it happen. Stay tuned…

Well, in retrospect, I would have to say that we weren’t so crazy after all! Although we have yet to make it out of the country, we certainly have taken quite a few steps towards getting there. I wonder what the next year will bring us?

We spent last night enjoying popcorn and a movie on board Katana. With no microwave on board we have had to stock up on Jiffy Pop which will cook on the stovetop. This stuff is getting quite hard to find these days!

As for a movie, most people would find it strange that we would choose to rent Open Water 2 – Adrift, a movie about a bunch of young people who jump off their boat without remembering to put the swim-ladder down. Oh oh. We just look at it as educational TV, and reason number 164 why we are happy to have a catamaran with built-in steps on the transoms!

  1. As someone else who also dreams big I’ve really enjoyed following your adventures so far. Happy anniversary Zero to Cruising 🙂

  2. Happy Anniversary, to all three of you; Rebecca, Mike, and Katana!

PS I know why Rebecca is smiling while she points to the rip. It’s because she is inside, where it’s warm enough to wear a tank top instead of foulies and a watch cap!

  3. You can easily pop microwave popcorn in a pot on a stove if you just tear the bag open and dump all the contents into a the pot. I don’t have a microwave and that’s how I usually do it whenever I can’t find kernels at the store. Even though I’m years away from my cruising dream I, for some reason, imagine keeping popcorn kernels on a boat rather than any kind of “ready-to-pop” solution would make sense. But I guess it really is a very minor issue in the grand scheme of things 😛

    • We do have a microwave now but choose to make popcorn the old fashion way, in a pot on the stove. Way too many chemicals in the microwave popcorn.
