Like many Caribbean islands, Grenada is never short of reasons to throw a party. In fact, the heart of their carnival, what they call SpiceMas, is a week-long party and it’s scheduled to ramp up this weekend. We have already booked ourselves into Port Louis Marina so that we’ll be back with our friends there, front and center for all the action, just as we were last year.

Yesterday’s Gold Medal win by Grenadian Kirani James may have just kick-started the festivities here though. Obviously proud of their hometown boy, I suspect that many of the villagers of Gouyave, where Kirani hails from, haven’t even been to bed since yesterday’s Olympic broadcast. Who can blame them? This is Grenada’s first-ever Olympic Gold Medal and I’m happy that we’re here to be able to share in that excitement.

Go Grenada!

And as for carnival, here are some sights from last year’s parade…

  1. You should train Grenada this winter for the bob sled event…..

  2. If you happen to see Mr. James partying in town, give him a Roll Tide! He ran for the University of Alabama in the 2010-11 season before turning pro!

      • It’s the battle cry of the University. They are called the Crimson Tide. It came from an early years radio announcer commenting that Alabama was covering up the other team like a Crimson Tide. So the crowd shouts Roll Tide Roll.
We Southerners care about College football like you Canadians love Hockey.

We say, Hey go team, y’all say, Go Team, Eh!

  3. Many many blessing of happiness and congratulations to Grenadian Kirani James on his gold medal run.

  4. We watched James win! I imagine Grenada will be partying for a while! Fantastic pictures of Carnival 2011. You were RIGHT THERE! Bummed we missed Carnival 2012. It’s tough being land locked!!
