Do you get it?
For those who “get it,” please sing along… you know you want to!
The Life – Kenny Chesney
Verse 1
It was early one mornin’
Playa del Carmen
That’s when I first met Jose
He had a 12 foot Schooner
A 3 foot cooler
Full of the catch of the day
And he was wrinkled from grinnin’
From all of the sun he had been in
He was barefoot, cerveza in hand
He said “Gracias senor”, when I paid him too much for
All of the Snapper he had
Now I told him my friend it ain’t nothin’
In the best broken Spanish I knew
I said I make a good livin’
Back home where I’m from
He smiled and said Amigo me too
(Chorus)
He said I fish and I play my guitar
I laugh at the bar with my friends
I go home to my wife
I pray every night
I can do it all over again
Verse 2
Somewhere over Texas
I thought of my Lexus
And all the stuff I work so hard for
And all the things that I’ve gathered
From climbing that ladder
Didn’t make much sense anymore
They say my nest egg ain’t ready to hatch yet
They keep holding my feet to the fire
They call it paying the price
So that one day in life
I’ll have what I need to retire
(Chorus)
And just fish
And play my guitar
And laugh at the bar with my friends
And go home to my wife
And pray every night
I can do it all over again
And to think that I thought for a while there that I had it made
When the truth is I’m really just dying
To live like Jose
And just fish
Play my guitar
Laugh at the bar with my friends
Go home to my wife
Pray every night
I can do it all over again
Wouldn’t that be the life?
Wouldn’t that be the life?
There are only two chances remaining.
Mike,
I expect you’ll be able to play this song on the uke next time we are together. I’ve almost got Gringo Honeymoon down and plan on filming me playing it with Shawn in Key West next week, over a bottle of Clarke’s Court to prove it.
Cheers,
Carl
REK! “I haven’t had a Schlitz beer since elementary school”.
Mike, nice to know you are spreading the good music.
P.S If you run into Sofisticated Lady, throw one back with Capt. Rick. I hear he may be in the vicinity.
I have heard that boat on the radio I think but we have yet to meet up with them. We’ll keep our eyes open. And yes, we are spreading the love for REK.
Can’t wait to see that video!
Great way to start the day. Thanks
You’re welcome Rob.
That’s what you are to some of us Mike, just wishin we were livin the Z to C life!!!
You all can!
Love the lyrics! We’d never heard this song before, but boy is it true. Yes, we get it!
I’m sure you do.
Love this song. I even had some t-shirts made up that say…A Castaway In Search of “The Life”
Cheers!
I’ll have to get my hands on one of those!
I’ve got this story–basically the same story–framed and posted above my bunk.

The older I become, the more I “get it.”
I remember reading that. I wonder if the song was inspired by that story or vice versa.
Did you know that Kenny has a house (compound really) on one of the beaches of St. Johns? So I guess all that hard work did pay off.
I had heard that. That’s pretty much the opposite of the song’s lyrics though. Perhaps he really needs to get to know Jose?
Hi again Mike;
We had a big taste of it on our year long sabbatical aboard Mango Groove down in the Bahamas. Back here in British Columbia now we are tucking the monies away hard and fast to get back to the “simple life” on a more permanent basis.
We have the vision of reality squarely in our cross hairs and the song sure does ring true.
We hope to catch you and Rebecca again sometime soon on the water!!

Can’t wait to knock some volleyball’s around with you again. Get out here soon. 🙂
