Cramming
With the formal end to hurricane season close on the horizon, many boats are busy, staging to depart Grenada. In fact, quite a number of our friends have already left, some heading north and others moving west. With time here growing shorter and shorter, talk amongst our friends, some of whom will not be returning next year, is how to cram in all of the activities that are still on the to-do list. It was for that reason that we decided to climb Mt. St. Catherine again yesterday, this time with a few of our cruising buddies who had yet to make the trip.
Kevin from Sabatticus, Brandon from Solmate and Scott from Rasmus joined Rebecca and I for the trip which began with an hour long Nascar-like drive to the beginning of the trail. With the significant amount of rain that we have had in the past few days, the trail was even more muddy than the first time we did the climb. In spite of that, the five of us trudged on, rising about the clouds to the summit in about 2 hours. As expected, descending was even a bit more tricky, with every bit of focus needed to resist the gravity which threatened to send us sailing down the muddy slope. We ultimately made it of course and were able to celebrate with some well-earned beer and Chinese food back in the town of Grenville. In truth, we were so muddy that I am surprised they even let us in that restaurant!
There are plenty of other photos from the climb posted on our Facebook Page.
On a related note, during the climb our friend Scott brought up the Volvo Ocean Race which apparently begins today (or began, depending on what time you are reading this). I told him that although I was quasi-familiar with the event, I had never followed it. He suggested perhaps that was because the last time it was run (2008-2009) we weren’t yet sailors. Sounds logical I guess.
Mike,
What are your plans? Which way are you heading after hurricane season is over?

Great question! π FAQ#1

1. Where are you heading?
South. How far south? Well, our current plan has us heading down towards Grenada but weβll be making plenty of stops before we get there!
Well, the above was our plan, and we certainly did it, but now everyone wants to know βwhatβs next?β Our current βplan,β circa 2011, is to head north again following hurricane season, possibly as far as St. Martin. Our intention is to fill in some of the gaps that we left during our fast track south. Next hurricane season will probably find us back in Grenada again, but after that, who knows!
OK, now I see how you guys avoided the razor grass. You took the airial route! Or else the mud protected you! Where are you guys headed, or are you staying in Grenada?
That was a razor-grass-free trail! See comment above for answer to question.
