New Years Day is, for many people, a time of reflection. Or rather, it is once the stupor caused by the previous night’s festivities has cleared. Now that I am stupor-free, I’m giving some thought to change. Even though many people shy away from change, anyone who has done, or is planning to do, the whole “sell off and go cruising” thing had better not be change-adverse!

CHANGE: A transformation or transition from one state, condition, or phase to another.

Most people avoid change with the thought that the above-mentioned transition will be to a worse state than it is now. We just never think that way.

I was thinking in particular about all of the “firsts” we had last year (way too long a list to post here), and of the ones that we will no doubt experience in 2010.

Looking into my crystal ball, the following is just a tiny sampling of what I see happening:

  • First time sailing out of sight of land
  • First time not having an actual Canadian address
  • First time going through a lock with our boat
  • First time communicating with an HF radio
  • First time running aground (I hear it’s inevitable but let’s hope our shallow-draft boat helps us to not tick this one off the list)
  • First time crossing the Gulf Stream (this might end up being early 2011 instead of 2010)
  • Countless more cool things and experiences!

“They must often change, who would be constant in happiness or wisdom.” ~ Confucius

I say embrace change and good things will come. Believe it, and have a great new year!
