When Rebecca and I moved back to Canada 1 month ago, we had no real plan for where we'd ultimately live or what we would end up doing. We have always contended though that when the time came for us to work again, we would just figure something out. Well, now we have a plan. In a couple of weeks, we'll be relocating from Fernie to Lake Country to begin new positions that we accepted over the weekend. We play…

Perhaps I should stop doing so as it feeds my already well-developed FoMO (Fear Of Missing Out) but I still routinely check a number of bikepacking groups on Facebook. I guess it's my way of remaining connected with our friends who are still out on the road while we're back in Canada doing our best to settle down. One of the things that fairly regularly pops up in those groups are posts where people are looking for a suggestion for a…

incredulous

The following piece was written for external publication back in August 2017, shortly after we had completed the Baja Divide. As I never seriously pursued having it printed, the article has sat unread in a folder on my laptop. The point I had hoped to convey in the piece was that with proper planning, difficult things can be accomplished by any of us. We just needed to replace our flip flops with snow boots and acquire some warm clothing (plaid, of course) so that we looked the part. The time that we invested in creating resumes, writing cover letters, and applying for jobs has paid off, at least for Rebecca. In the short time…

It was minus 23C in Fernie this morning. That's not a pleasant temperature for anyone, and that includes the locals. In spite of temperatures which are a definite shock to our systems, we're both very pleased with our decision to make Fernie our new home. And I say that even though we've only been here a week. To anyone who ever asked, we always said that if we were to move back to Canada, it would be to British Columbia. As…

promise

On several occasions we have taken note how certain cruising friends, once finished with their life on the water, so easily slid back into accumulating all the trappings of life on land. I don't say that to judge because comfort and toys can feel good. Our promise to one another though, and I express that same promise to you, our readers: we do not intend to follow that same path. We have become so accustomed to living in small spaces with…
