The issue of locating charts may have been solved. Our favorite local chandlery, Pride Marine, has ordered the chips we need and a new Kingston-area friend who we met here in Georgetown will be picking them up to bring them to us on her visit back home in a few days. If all goes well, we should have them in our possession on the 13th. But the issues don’t end there!

Having found a chip here that another cruiser was willing to part with, we tested it out in our unit, only to find that our Garmin chartplotter wouldn’t read it. We have come to believe that our next-to-new unit needs a firmware upgrade. No problem right? You just go to the Garmin website and download the free upgrade. Except… internet isn’t really all that easy to come by here, or stable. This required going into town to an internet cafe to accomplish. Not only that, the download can only be done on a PC, not a Mac! Bastards! Good thing we have made some friends here.

George, another Canadian on s/v RomantaSea, was kind enough to download it for us onto an SD card. All excited to perform the upgrade, we raced back to our boat and stuck the SD card into the plotter. Nada! I guess we needed to read the instructions a bit more. Apparently the file we downloaded needs to be extracted, etc. etc. Blah, Blah. So now I need to go find George and his PC again and bug him some more. 🙁

Another night in Georgetown, another party!

Hi Mike Rebbeca. what Mac are you running ? are you able to run “boot camp” that way you are able to”or would of bean able” to add microsoft in boot camp. then you would be able to run all the microsoft stuff. this is the way i have got around most things as i use Apple Mac OS 10.6 Upgrade with Snow Leopard . 🙂 There are programs that will convert other programs but as you say you need a good internet connection.
On the Apple side of things if you have an IPOD be careful on the new up date for your ITUNES it has a virus of some sorts & is crashing the ipods, It has happened to mine & now i need a new Ipod “$200″ & all my music is lost 8000 songs & pictures There is an Apple forum but they are all saying the same it can not be fixed” & There is me thinking they don’t get Viruses “lol”

    • We’re running 10.5.8. We do not have boot camp installed nor do we have enough drive space to really allocate towards that. Although Rebecca has, I have NEVER used a windows machine so guaranteed I would be lost.

As for updates, I have learned over the years to NOT update when things first come out. I always wait a fairly long time to make sure there are no bugs, or other problems with the updates. I am actually quite hesitant to update the firmware on the plotter for that reason.

Hi your comp has boot camp built in just use the search in finder & u only need 32mb to run windows & i only use it for things like , files that are not compatible with Apple, usb ,disks & transfer my music to my sony mp3 or if i need to make a video for some one out of the “zones for videos that run in USA & want them used in UK as they have different zoning
That way you can sort things like that out as most users are windows ” it’s a pity” but some one has to lol
Either way we Hope you get it all sorted

  2. Well, after all that fun, I guess you have to have a LITTLE frustration, for contrast if for nothing else! 🙂

  3. Good luck on the charts. I have been stocking up on some myself.

So how much is it for a beer down there?
Expensive? Is there some kind of cheap alcohol available?

    • Definitely get any charts you want BEFORE leaving the US.

Beer = 4-6 bucks per bottle in the Bahamas (at a bar). I haven’t looked at a the price for a case. Probably comparable to Canada.
Liquor is comparable with the US (which is still much cheaper than Canada.
