All I want for Christmas is…
Wind? Yes, more wind is on the menu for the islands around here at this time of year and they’ve even named this phenomena the “Christmas Winds.” We first heard about the Christmas Winds when we were in Grenada but my subsequent research hasn’t given me a lot of results on specifics (try Googling it yourself). The most I can gather is that the normal south-easterly trade winds tend to shift a bit north in the winter months and frequently can blow in the 20-25 knot range, or even higher. Being that we’re now as far north as we intend to go this season, the more northerly breeze should hopefully give us a better sailing angle as we head back down through the islands, in theory anyway.
Yesterday the weather was perfect for a stroll along nearby Simpson Bay Beach. Today? Not so much.
The (Christmas?) winds be a blowin! It’s all good though… I needed to collect some more rain water.
The other night sure was calm though!
We experienced the Christmas winds during a BVI New Year’s charter a couple of years ago.
Charter outfit briefed us of a small craft warning for the first couple of days during the captain’s meeting, but said Ok to proceed under power or reefed sails.
I didn’t tell the rest of the crew that we were starting the first day under a small craft advisory!
Best to keep that to yourself. 🙂
