As the internet is extremely sketchy here in Basseterre (on for 5 seconds, off for 3 minutes), I’m going to have to make this a very brief post. Rebecca and I plan to raise anchor around 6:00 AM this morning and bypassing Les Saintes, head directly to Portsmouth, Dominica. Hopefully we’ll have a reasonably smooth passage and we’ll be able to check in via Facebook when we arrive.

Have a great day, everyone!

  1. Following your trip on the chart, I have noticed, again, how much the depth changes. Just off Les Saintes the bottom goes from 1100m to 48m in less than 3M for instance.

I realise that tidal streams are generally, but not always, quite slow. If they were strong then the effect would be drastic. But this amount of change could still cause considerable turbulence.

So I was wondering if this is something that you have to look out for around the steep-to volcanic islands and if you have to plan your route so as to avoid areas of rapid depth change.

    • We don’t necessarily work to avoid areas like that but we are aware of them. You are correct, in certain conditions the seas can stand up in those locations.
