In the post-apocolytical movie Mad Max: Beyond Thunderdome, the greatest crime one can commit is to kill a pig. Pigs in the movie, being the source of the waste which produces methane and thus the cities power, are a huge resource and any person who destroys this resource is permanently tattooed with the words Pig Killer. Now, the pigs we found on the beach at Big Majors Spot aren’t quite that kind of resource, although the beach they frequent is a bit of a tourist destination, so I wonder if I would have received such a brand had I snuffed out that pig when he nipped me in the arm! Sorry, no pics of this but the aforementioned “nipping” (I don’t want to exaggerate and say bite but he did draw blood) occurred when he repeatedly tried to climb into our little dinghy and I was pushing him off. Aggressive little (big actually) bugger! That’s what happens when animals get fed over and over by tourists I guess.

From Sampson Cay, we motored for all of 30 minutes yesterday through the shallows to our new anchorage at Staniel Cay. Once again, we have anchored away from the masses, anticipating the shift in winds that are due to occur tomorrow and then build as the week progress. I wonder how many of the other boats will shift their locations to where we are now.

Speaking of winds, in the last two days I have had two different experienced bahamas cruisers ask me how we obtain our weather info. Much more so to boaters than land dwellers, the weather dictates everything. Many of the anchorages in this area have excellent protection from east winds but are unfortunately exposed to the west. Much like the winds did around Christmas, we have heard they will clock around to blow from that direction, which is why we have chosen the particular spot where our boat now sits. We’ll see how well it works out for us.

  1. Something about seeing pink pigs in beautiful blue water that’s so strange! Glad you only got “nipped”! Here’s a superstition about pigs you might enjoy.

Atlantic seamen in the West Indies had a bizarre superstition related to swine. Pigs themselves were held at great respect because they possessed cloven hooves just like the devil and the pig was the signature animal for the Great Earth Goddess who controlled the winds. As a result, these fishermen never spoke the word “pig” out loud, instead referring to the animal by such safe nicknames as Curly-Tail and Turf-Rooter. It was believed that mentioning the word “pig” would result in strong winds. Actually KILLING A PIG ONBOARD the ship would result in a full scale storm.

So, if you’re gonna eat pork, don’t kill any pigs on board! (I don’t think Rebecca would go for that anyway) LOL! I’ve also heard that pigs and roosters were the only survivors of shipwrecks, so sailors would tattoo a pig or a rooster on themselves to ward off drowning. Break out the ink!

  2. Nipped by a pig, eh? Should be interesting onboard during the next full moon… 😉

  3. Well, it WAS a pig, not a wolf! However, pig bites can be nasty. Have you had your rabies shot? Beautiful pics, BTW.

  4. If a pig had ‘nipped’ me, he’d be curing by now.
