While we may not have been in our homeland, that did not deter us, or the other Cannucks down here, from celebrating Canadian Thanksgiving yesterday. And instead of simply feasting on turkey and all the fixings, which we all most certainly did, I spent some time reflecting on all of the things that we really do have to be thankful for.

A wonderful meal shared with excellent friends in a beautiful locale…

…much to be thankful for!

For whatever reason, opportunities have begun to present themselves to us. Here is just a small example of what I’m talking about. On our way home from the Thanksgiving Day dinner at Clarke’s Court Bay Marina, Rebecca and I found ourselves being passed by several buses which were full to capacity. Although we weren’t in a huge hurry, after the 4th bus drove by us, we decided to give hitchhiking a try. As often happens when we do so, mere seconds after we stuck out our thumbs, a local resident stopped to offer us a ride. It just so happens that this particular driver is also the Captain of the Seawind catamaran docked right in front of us at one of the huge houses up on the hill. Not only that but, after we spoke for a few moments, he offered to take us out sailing with them this coming Sunday! While this particular opportunity might be chalked up to simple coincidence, some others are definitely the result of seeds that we have planted. Regardless of their source, we are thankful for them all, and wish the same good fortune to our families and friends, and also to all of you following along with us.

Oh, and in case you missed our 800th Day Cruising Anniversary yesterday, don’t worry, we missed it too. It’s alright though as we’re both still on the wagon. We’ll save the party for some time when we can enjoy a nice glass of wine. And for those who were stumped by yesterday’s quiz…

  1. Any reason you can offer why the American flag in that first shot is hanging upside down? I have my own ideas on that but did anybody have specifics? Just wondering. And the question that is on our minds here is if you ate all that food, are you feeling kind of weighed down today? That’s a lot of food. Happy Thanksgiving from Masha and myself!

    • Re: flag… no idea. I didn’t notice it until you mentioned it.

Re: food… I most definitely ate it all. It was pretty much lunch and dinner though. As for today, I feel great. Just finished working out and I’m ready to go have some fun.

  2. A flag hanging upside down is the international sign for distress. And the USA is indeed in distress.

  3. Love the spirit in your post. Giving thanks, planting seeds, good fortune, opportunities – these things go together very well. Hitchhiking too, if you are in the right place. I have had some serendipity myself at times and its twice as good when you appreciate what is going on. I think the seeds are sown each day in countless small acts of kindness, but I’m a philosophical guy. I was on the Hudson river yesterday and saw a Cat with the mast down heading south and thought of you guys.

  4. Wow, Canadian Thanksgiving/bash your American neighbor day? What’s up with the stars and bars hanging upside down? The second I looked at the picture I could feel the finger jam into my eye socket. Just poking fun and know you had nothing to do with it! Have been reading your website for a long time! You guys are inspirational! We are just starting out and hope to have half as much fun as you!
    Fair winds!

    • Hi Dave

Yeah, I wouldn’t do that but I can assure you that if it was done intentionally it was all in fun. There were plenty of Americans present that day (yeah, we invited them too) who could have done something about it and no one did. Perhaps they were like me and were too focused on the turkey to notice. 🙂

PS: Took a look at your blog… pretty boat! Also, keep heading south, the weather will get warmer. I promise!

  5. It looks to me that the flag in question was originally hanging from the end, similar to the Canadian, and one end (the top) came loose, making it look like it was upside down.

    • That is what I suspected too but I zoomed in on it and it does appear to be pinned at the bottom. Anyway, I say drop the subject people… focus on the turkey! 🙂
