Yesterday we met with Ron Walsh, a local amateur radio buff who welcomed us into his home to show us the basics of being a Ham. He had quite the setup with a variety of radio rigs and was able to give us a demonstration, starting up a conversation with another Ham from Mississippi. He was less than pleased when we told him the guys from the local Ham club didn’t get back to us about the course they were running as they had just graduated a whole group the previous night! Oh well… I guess we’ll do it on our own. We were directed by Ron to purchase the study guide (AC Study Guide for the Basic Exam) from Radio World and so we placed our order last night. Once we feel we are familiar enough with the material we simply call him back and we can write the test (Ron is an official examiner). One other thing we found out is that having a Marine Radio License is an entirely different thing so when I dropped in to West Marine yesterday to pick up a new GPS unit (see post below) I put our names down for the next course they will be running.
